The Soul of Makossa
This Friday saw the last segment of the special Francophone month on the Friday Ripple. Today our quest to discover the sounds from the French speaking countries of Africa.
This time our curiosity took us to Cameroon in search of the origin of the popular Makossa dance music that developed from a hand clapping Kossa dance among the Duala people of Cameroon.
The group Yogo Yogo opened the show on a joyous tone with the official theme song of Uganda’s Jubilee celebrations.
Makossa dance music like many other African genres is also influenced by the Congolese Soukous guitar grooves. The word Makossa itself means dance in the Cameroonian Duala language. It enjoyed its first taste of mainstream success in the 1970s mostly due to Manu Dibango’s smash single, Soul Makossa. The song became an international phemonenom and many artists have gone to sample parts of the Makossa classic.
Cameroon’s unique geographic location between the main musical hubs in Africa has produced a hybrid fuse of Afro rhythms. Over the years as music has travelled between West, South and East Africa, Cameroon has embraced many of these sounds from Azonto, Highlife and Juju music.
We closed the show paying our respects to recently departed Nigerian author, poet and critic, Chinua Achebe. He will be forever remembered for his 1958 publication, Things Fall Apart.
