Afro Diva International
This Friday Ripple fell perfectly on the same day as the International Women’s Day, 8th March. The show was specially dedicated to celebrating the achievements of African female musicians.
The strong voice of Cape Verdean folk singer Cesaria Evora opened the show with Tiempo y Silencio featuring Pedro Guerra. Nicknamed the Barefoot Diva, Cesaria Evora died in December 2011.
As we continued with an uninterrupted flow of music from some of Africa’s top female icons, we also pointed out the huge challenges these female singers encounter in a male dominated industry.
The voice of Afropop singer Oumou Sangare continues to echo as she performs at many international events. Most recently the Malian singer endorsed a car brand named after her. The luxury sedan is called the Oum Sang and is only available in Mali.
Rightfully closing the show was the song Thank You Mr Dj by South African Afropop singer, Yvonne Chaka Chaka better known to many as the Princess of Africa.
