Michael Žantovský

Michael Žantovský vystudoval psychologii na Karlově univerzitě a McGill University v Montrealu a působil jako vědecký pracovník ve Výzkumném ústavu psychiatrickém v Praze. V osmdesátých letech 20. století působil jako nezávislý překladatel, publicista a textař. Přeložil do češtiny více než padesát děl moderní anglo-americké prózy, poezie a dramatu. Přispíval do samizdatového tisku, od roku 1988 byl pražským dopisovatelem agentury Reuters. Napsal též knihu o životě a díle Woodyho Allena. Je autorem rozsáhlého životopisu zesnulého prezidenta HAVEL, který vyšel v češtině, angličtině a dalších jazycích v listopadu 2014.

V listopadu 1989 spoluzakládal Občanské fórum a v prosinci 1989 se stal jeho tiskovým mluvčím. V lednu 1990 se stal tiskovým tajemníkem a mluvčím prezidenta Václava Havla. Byl také politickým koordinátorem kanceláře prezidenta. V letech 1996–2002 byl senátorem Parlamentu ČR a předsedou senátního Výboru pro zahraniční věci, obranu a bezpečnost. V letech 1997 a 2001–2 byl předsedou Občanské demokratické aliance. Byl velvyslancem České republiky ve Spojených státech amerických, v Izraeli a ve Spojeném království. Od roku 2015 je ředitelem Knihovny Václava Havla.

Michael Žantovský graduated in psychology from Charles University, Prague, and McGill University, Montreal, and worked as a researcher at the Psychiatric Research Centre in Prague. In the 1980s he was a freelance translator, journalist and lyricist. He has translated more than 50 works of modern Anglo-American prose, poetry and drama. He contributed to samizdat press and worked as a correspondent for Reuters in Prague. He has also written a book on the life and writings of Woody Allen. He is the author of an extensive biography of the late Czech President, Václav Havel, which was published in Czech, English and other languages in November 2014.

He was one of the founding members of Občanské fórum (Civic Forum) in November 1989 and became its spokesman in December 1989. In January 1990 he became President Václav Havel’s spokesman. Apart from that he was also political coordinator of the President´s Office. He was a member of the Czech Republic Senate in 1996–2002 and Chairman of the Senate’s Committee for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Security. Between 1997 and 2001–2 he was chairman of the Civil Democratic Alliance. He used to be Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the United States of America, Israel and the United Kingdom. He now works as Director of Václav Havel Library.
