Jiří Kollert is a contrabass player with the Janáček opera orchestra in Brno (1970–1975); a music theory teacher at conservatories in Kroměříž, Brno, and Prague; a senior lecturer at the Academy of Performing Arts (AMU) in Prague (1993–2007).
He graduated in the field of composition with A. Piňos (MA studies) and M. Ištvan (PhD. studies) at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts (JAMU) in Brno.
Later he was a scholarship holder of the Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt (1984), and a member of Ateliér 90, an association for composers, performing artists and musicologists. In 1996 he was appointed senior lecturer in the field of music composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratisalva, Slovakia, and in 1998 he became a senior lecturer also in the field of music theory at the AMU in Prague.
In the years 1999–2004 he accompanied his wife on a diplomatic mission in Tokio.
