Introduction and Rondo Brilliant for piano and orchestra, op. 22 - J. V. H. Voříšek (ed. Petra Matějová)

5. říjen 2015

Introduction and Rondo Brilliant for piano and orchestra, op. 22 by Jan Václav Hugo Voříšek (1791-1825) is based on two preserved sources and aims at the most possible authentic record of notation. The first source is Voříšek’s manuscript of a score kept in the archive Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna under the call number VII 64304 that includes only Rondo without Introduction. A complete second source that includes both Introduction and Rondo is an undated contemporaneous print of solo piano and orchestral parts Tobias Haslinger from Vienna. A copy is kept in historic collections of Czech Radio under a call number ARCH 433.

Judging by the autograph, the Introduction and Rondo Brillant, op. 22 was finished on 17th February 1817. Several performances of the work have been documented: Not long after the completion of the piece, in May 1817, it was played by the renowned Josef Szalay – Hummel’s student, who was taken up by Voříšek after Hummel’s departure to Stuttgart in 1816. In December 1821 the Rondo was performed at the Minor Hall of the Reduta in Vienna by Voříšek’s student František Vincenc Kramář. According to available reviews it was Voříšek himself who played the Rondo Brillant (in the reviews it was usually mentioned without the Introduction) in January 1819, in December 1820, and also in April 1823 at a concert that was the last one featuring the Rondo we have a record of. The work was published by Tobias Haslinger only in December 1826, precisely a year and a month after Voříšek’s death. On the occasion of the publication the composition was also performed, accompanied by a string quartet, at an evening concert at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde.
