Jakub Michl studied cello at Prague Conservatory with Tomáš Strašil, while parallely studying musicology at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University, Prague. From that time, he has been interested in historically informed performance, starting with baroque cello. In 2004, he began studying the viola da gamba with Petr Wagner, and later with Michael Brüssing.
He has participated in many early music courses in the Czech Republic (Valtice, Prachatice), England (Dartington International Summer School), and France (Académie de Sablé), studying viola da gamba with Marianne Muller, Michael Brüssing, Reiko Ichise, and baroque cello with Bruno Cocset, Irmtraud Hubatschek and Susan Sheppard.
After graduating from Prague Conservatory, Jakub was awarded a grant from the Foundation for the Support of Classical Music to study viola da gamba with Alison Crum at Trinity College of Music, London. There, he took part in masterclasses taught by Wieland Kuijken (2009, TCM), and by Hille Perl (2008, International Festival of Viols, hosted by the Royal College of Music), Richard Boothby (2009, RCM), and Jordi Savall (2010, RCM). He currently studies with Vittorio Ghielmi at the Mozerteum in Salzburg.
Jakub has worked with early music ensembles such as Musica Florea, Czech Ensemble Baroque, Les Traversées Baroques, Collegium 419, Hypochondria Ensemble, Trinity College Consort of Viols, Greenwich Baroque, Octopus Pragensis, Ritornello, Svobodné hudební bratrstvo, and Capella Ornamenta.
