Czech Radio Prevailed over BBC at Prix Italia
Czech Radio has been awarded a great recognition for its radio play "Woyzeck", written by Georg Bűchner, in the category Drama at the 61st International festival Prix Italia in Torino. Czech Radio, thus, defeated the Swedish and British productions. It has placed itself after the absolute winner of Prix Italia, which was ARD from Germany with its work "My Body in Nine Parts." The jury evaluated thirteen works submitted by twelve countries.
"Second place is amazing! We have even overcome BBC," said Aleš Vrzák, the director of the play, and went on to add "in the first voting we advanced to the final round only on the fourth position, however, we ended up second after the German production in the finals."
The theatre play "Woyzeck", written by the German author of the 19th century Georg Bűchner and translated to Czech by Ludvík Kundera, was adapted for the radio by Hynek Pekárek, director Aleš Vrzák, sound designer and also the author of the scenic music Michal Rataj. The Prix Italia jury appraised the play especially for its outstanding balanced text adaptation that is considered to belong among the most excellent works on the world-class level. The plot of the narration is passion and a horrific story of love with a bad ending. According to the jury, the direction and production of this piece of work for radio broadcasting was brilliant - the mix of sound, music and notable performances.
About "Woyzeck"
Woyzeck, soldier and barber, is a man of poor mental and material condition, constantly lamed by both service for the dubious authority as well as by cruel medical experiments. The only fulfilment of his life is his relationship with Mary and child who they are bringing up together. Woyzeck, the outlaw of the omnipresent reality and his own anxieties and anger, is driven by Mary's infidelity to a desperate deed.
